Trillian for iOS is built for iPhone Duo: open it on its side for your chats beside the conversation, like an iPad, or close it and keep chatting on the cover screen.
iPhone Duo is here, and Trillian is ready for it. Open it on its side and Trillian works like it does on an iPad, with your chats beside the conversation. Close it and Trillian keeps going on the cover screen. Fold or unfold in the middle of a chat and you're right where you left off.
Your chats beside the conversation
The whole screen, not a window in the middle
An app doesn't fill the Duo's inner screen on its own. One that hasn't been rebuilt for the Duo opens in a window in the middle, with black borders all around it. Apps rebuilt with the first iOS 27 tools fill most of the screen but stop short of the strip on the right where the status bar sits. Only apps built for iOS 27.1 use the whole screen.
Three ways an app can open
Trillian is built for the latest iOS, 27.1, so it's in that last group.
Held sideways, it works like an iPad
Turn it on its side
Turn the open Duo on its side and Trillian crossfades into the layout it uses on an iPad: your chats list runs down the left, with Chats, Contacts and Settings as labeled tabs, and the conversation sits beside it. The chat's header lines up with the top of the list, and both the header and the message box keep their full size instead of shrinking the way they do on a phone turned sideways.
Long messages keep to a comfortable reading width rather than stretching across the whole screen, and photos stay inside the conversation. New Message, Add Contact and a contact's info open as cards floating over the chat, and the long-press menu and the banner for a new message line up with the conversation too. Even the camera opens in its iPad layout.
Upright, it's the iPhone you know
Familiar, with room to spare
Turn it upright and Trillian goes back to one pane, just like on your iPhone, with the tab bar along the bottom and a lot more room for the conversation.
Half open, like a laptop
A tiny laptop
Stand the Duo half open on a desk, like a tiny laptop, and start typing. The keyboard fills the half lying flat, while your conversation and the message box stay on the half standing up, so you can read and reply without holding the phone.
Closed, on the cover screen
On the cover screen
Close the Duo and Trillian is right there on the cover screen. The buttons that sit along the top on an iPhone, Back, New Message and Add Contact, move into a column down the right edge under the status bar, so the conversation gets the rest of the screen. You can read a message and answer it without opening the phone.
The screens you don't see every day fit too. The photo viewer's close button sits in that column instead of being squeezed into a corner, a thread's backdrop runs the whole width, a contact's Info and Favorites fill the screen, and signing in, the PIN lock and two-factor setup all lay out around the column instead of running under it.
Fold or unfold mid-chat
Pick up where you were
Open the phone in the middle of a chat and the conversation is waiting on the big screen, at your newest message, with the messages spread out to fill the new width. Close it again and they re-wrap for the cover screen. If you had the photo tray open, it lays itself out again for the screen it's on, and with a keyboard attached there's no empty gap left behind under the chat.
How we got it ready
Every way you hold it
We treated the Duo as a device of its own. We went through every core screen on it, open and closed, upright and sideways: the chats list, private chats and channels, the + card, @mentions, voice clips, the long press on Send, photos and the photo viewer, Contacts, Settings, and signing in. In the last week before launch alone, 25 changes went in just for the Duo, from the iPad-style layout when it's open on its side to a PIN pad that fits the open screen.
