The emoji on your quick reaction bar are now yours to choose, on iPhone and Android alike. It reached both phones in updates over the last few days, each with a few extras.

The gear and recents Pick your quick reactions
Tap the gear to choose which emoji sit on your reaction bar. On iPhone, it's in the reaction picker, next to a new row of the emoji you've used lately.
The gear on Android On Android, tap the add-a-reaction button at the end of the bar, and the gear is beside Search emoji. Picking an emoji there closes the sheet and adds it to your bar.
On iPhone, taking a reaction back now plays a pop.
Elsewhere in these updates
Android picked up a few smaller changes. Long-press a message that's partly hidden and it slides fully into view, sending a photo while you're scrolled up takes you to the bottom of the chat, and videos show up in the chat sooner after you send them.
On iPhone, the update fixes two things: a picture dropped mid-sentence no longer eats the words after it, and small HEIC photos from the camera roll go out as JPEG again.
