Today, June 30, Google switched off the Tenor API, which apps used to search and share Tenor's GIFs. New sign-ups had stopped in January. Tenor lives on inside Google's own products; every other app needs a new source, and the API is already on Killed by Google.
Trillian had used Tenor for GIF search since 2020. Our GIFs come from KLIPY now.
When each app switched (updated August 5)
- Windows: the May 26 update shows the KLIPY GIFs other people send you, and since June 26 the GIFs you pick come from KLIPY too.
- Mac: the June 29 update switched GIFs to KLIPY.
- Linux: since the June 4 update, GIFs play right in the chat with the logo of the service they came from, Tenor or KLIPY.
- Android: 7.0 shows the KLIPY GIFs people send you, and starting with the July 27 update you send them too.
- Web: the GIFs you send have come from KLIPY since July 15.
- iOS: GIF search and trending come from KLIPY since 7.0 on August 5.
Nothing changes in how you pick a GIF. If search comes up empty, that copy of Trillian is still asking Tenor; update it and your GIFs come back.
