Trillian stands for interoperability. With interoperable software and a decentralized, federated chat network, Trillian has been connecting companies and individuals for nearly 20 years.
Today's Trillian provides its own native chat network
and plugins for select third-party chat networks like Jabber/XMPP and IRC. We believe instant messaging should work more like email (i.e., the way your work email account can send emails to a Gmail account) and promote federation technologies to help make this possible. Federation - not walled gardens - is the best way to connect companies to other companies and to their customers without having to manage 5 different chat services. Trillian lets you chat outside of the company by:
  1. Connecting your company directly to other companies running XMPP-compatible IM servers like Cisco Jabber and certain versions of Skype for Business.
  2. Connecting your company to external vendors or customers by having them register a free Trillian account and federating with the public Trillian cloud.
  3. Connecting your company directly to Trillian's federation partners like CME Pivot and Trade Alert. Want to federate with us? Say hello!
  4. Leveraging Trillian's third-party IM plugins to connect to services like Olark to chat with customers visiting your website.

How does federation work?
Federation is a server-level technology that works quietly in the background to connect your Trillian Server to another XMPP-compatible server elsewhere on the internet. Trillian's federation is accomplished using the popular XMPP protocol.
What other chat services can Trillian federate with?
All Trillian Server deployments - including the public Trillian cloud - can federate with each other (pending approval at the organizational level). Trillian can also federate to XMPP-speaking services like Cisco Jabber, certain versions of Skype for Business, CME Pivot IM, and Trade Alert.
What third-party services are supported through plugins?
Trillian can connect to: Google Talk, Facebook, Jabber/XMPP, IRC, IMAP, and POP3 accounts. These connections are made directly from your Trillian client to the third-party service in question.
I would like to federate with Trillian. How can I?
We don't charge fees or whitelist our federation partners. As long as your XMPP deployment uses TLS and has a valid certificate, federation to the trillian.im domain will work via standard XMPP dialback.
