Welcome to Trillian 6, an exciting and feature-packed new release for Trillian and Trillian Server! Use the navigation links above to learn about some of the key new features in each Trillian client and Trillian Server itself.
With its modernized user interface making your chatting experience faster and more efficient, Trillian 6 should feel right at home on Windows 10! Tabs are now stacked vertically on the left side of chat windows, making them more accessible and improving support for a large number of open conversations. A responsive design means tab content will neatly collapse if you reduce the size of the tab area, and we also support both "tiny" and "normal" sizes for tabs. Bubble view now show timestamps at the top of the bubbles themselves so you always know when a message was sent, and simple view has been modernized and cleaned up.
Trillian 6 is now equipped with a fully armed and operational suite of the latest emoji, enabling you to express yourself like never before! Don't worry, we left all of the classic animated Trillian emoticons in place for all of you old-timers who can't live without them.
Trillian 6 now detects many popular image types and displays them right inside of the chat window, including animated GIFs and PNGs!
Text snippets let you configure short pieces of text that are exposed in Trillian chat windows for easy access by your users. For example, if you employ a group of traders who are regularly copying and pasting the same disclaimer to customers you can configure it as a text snippet. Text snippets will appear visually and can be selected with the mouse or typed by hand using an assigned short code.
Text snippets are only available to Trillian for Business customers. |
You can now keep scrolling your chat windows up and Trillian 6 will keep loading additional messages. Handy for times when you don't want to open the full chat history viewer but need to see a few more messages!
Trillian 6 boasts a powerful new way to aggregate incoming message flow into a single tab via the new All Private Chats UI. Learn more about this feature and other exciting ways to maximize screen real estate in our guide for commodity traders.
Trillian's powerful internal events system has gotten a huge makeover, making it more accessible than ever. Change sounds and notifications, add keyboard hotkeys to open chat windows to your favorite contacts, or even set schedule events to occur based on the time of day.
Trillian 6 comes equipped with support for Tricia McMillan, a special bot-classed user that you can control with API calls or slash commands. By default, Tricia comes with the ability to check the weather, but your company can expand her in many different ways: checking product inventory counts, checking a shuttle schedule, querying the status of bugs in a company bug tracker, etc.
Tricia McMillan is only available to Trillian for Business customers. |
The popular Olark service has been given its own plugin in Trillian 6, making it easier than ever before to engage with customers visiting your website using Trillian+Olark. The new plugin features beautiful new country-based avatars to help you identify visitors easily, a cleaned up contact tooltip exposing additional visitor information, and various other tweaks and improvements to help you stay in touch with your website visitors in real-time.
In-game chat can now scale to match your high DPI environment, supports themes, and has been reworked to match the rest of the new Trillian UI. Twitch streamers, take note: a new display mode has been added to allow you to keep the Trillian overlay visible while continuing to pass mouse and keyboard control to your game!
Trillian 6 has been beefed up to look great on modern HiDPI displays. Enjoy crisper text and images throughout the entire product.
Blast messaging (formerly known as mass messaging) has been given a quick UI polish in Trillian 6. When utilizing blast messaging to send a message to multiple recipients, each recipient is now shown in a list on the right hand side of a chat window. In addition, a special icon has been assigned to blast windows to help you pick them out easily within an existing tabbed chat window.

The connection icons at the top of the contact list are now retina-aware, which should represent the last major UI element that was still missing retina graphics. Trillian 6 is the sharpest version yet!
We spent some time improving Trillian's ability to detect the loss of an internet connection and its subsequent healing, making sure that we reconnect you as soon as possible. Users of laptops who frequently closed their laptop lids should find that Trillian's ability to reconnect on resume has vastly improved with this release.
The details window, emoji browser, and members list within the chat window now all support the dark theme.

Trillian 6 boasts fully-featured Apple Watch integration. Reply to messages directly from notifications on your watch, leverage the Trillian complication to quickly load Trillian on your watch, and leverage the watch app itself to quickly send and receive instant messages. You can even send voice clips directly from your watch!

Timestamps are included automatically in each bubble cluster.
Trillian Server administrators can now require that mobile versions of Trillian authenticate via a combination of password and PIN code. When enabled, a Trillian-specific pin code (not the user's password) will be required to unlock Trillian after a period of inactivity. Consider a physician who shares her iPad with her young children and adds their fingerprints to the unlock screen; an additional Trillian-specific pin will protect her from possible PHI exposure at the cost of an additional code to remember.
Pin code authentication is only available to Trillian for Business customers. |
As more and more customers rely on Trillian in HIPAA-regulated environments, ensuring that the loss or theft of a mobile device doesn't expose PHI becomes critically important. When your Trillian administrator instructs Trillian clients not to store chat history on devices, Trillian 6 now goes the extra mile to make sure it doesn't leave a trace of data stored on disk. This includes: disabling the user's ability to save outgoing photos to the camera roll, purging and disabling any diagnostic logs on the device, aggressively clearing any cache files used by Trillian during normal use, and preventing message data from being stored in files on disk that persist after app suspension.
Administrative control over chat history preferences is only available to Trillian for Business customers. |

You can now optionally encrypt all data at rest with AES, including Trillian Server's internal SQL database, certain sensitive configuration files, and any images or files shared by your users. When enabled, a strong passphrase will be required to start Trillian Server in order to derive an encryption key.
You can now disable support for older versions of TLS within Trillian Server. Disabling older versions of TLS is a good idea as long as you get everyone upgraded to the latest Trillian client software, and is also required for those of you staying PCI compliant. Trillian Server 6 also supports the modern ChaCha20 cipher and Poly1305 MAC.
Trillian Server now runs as a sandboxed user, and the data directories used by Trillian Server are similarly protected. This means that in the event your Trillian Server is compromised, an attacker will have a harder time pivoting to take over the entire system and will have limited privileges on your network as well.
Retention periods allow you to delete chat history and media after a set period of time elapses. They can be configured company-wide and/or for individual group chats. For example, you might configure a sensitive group chat to delete its history every 24 hours while maintaining a 90 day period for the rest of the company.
Synchronization with Active Directory or OpenLDAP can now be scheduled to occur automatically on an hourly or daily basis. This means you don't need to launch Trillian Server and run an import every time something changes on the LDAP side - imports will be running continuously in the background and keeping things current.
Trillian Server 6 now lets you keep avatars synchronized with your LDAP source as they change over time, whereas previous versions only imported an avatar during initial user creation. In addition, avatar synchronization supports larger avatars and features a refined resizing algorithm.
Tricia is a special bot-classed user that you can control with API calls or slash commands. By default, Tricia comes with the ability to check the weather. Some ideas for custom slash commands: check product inventory counts, check a shuttle schedule, query the status of bugs in a company bug tracker, etc. Get creative!
A secure, RESTful API is now available to modify or query Trillian Server using your own code. Programmatically send messages to group chats, query and modify user presence, and much more! Please feel free to reach out with suggestions and ideas after your team has had a chance to evaluate the API. You can find our current API documentation online to help you get started.
A large batch of new policies have been added to Trillian Server 6 in order to help keep your unruly employees under control, and the policy UI has been given a visual makeover to make reviewing and editing policies easier. Some of the new policies include requiring encryption at-rest on clients, requiring PIN codes on mobile clients, restricting voice clips, push privacy, and much more!
Useful in certain NAT environments and for those of you who are running Trillian Server on a shared server (which we don't recommend!), you can now bind Trillian Server to a particular interface on your system.
You can now add new users to Trillian Server manually even when synchronizing with an LDAP source. Useful for temporary employees, contractors, and anyone else who doesn't necessarily need LDAP access but you'd still like on Trillian.
Various tweaks and improvements have been made to ensure Trillian Server Manager shines on modern HiDPI displays.
Trillian Server Manager no longer opens a web browser when viewing saved images and files.
Due to architectural requirements imposed by Apple and Google, all push notification traffic must first be proxied through servers under Cerulean Studios' control for final delivery to providers. This traffic is always secured with TLS and is never logged by Cerulean Studios. If you're sharing PHI in a HIPAA-regulated environment or have similar privacy requirements, you can now instruct Trillian Server to only send a summary string to the push servers instead of the message body itself. For example, a physician would see "You have received a new message from Tricia" instead of "Tricia: Mr. Doe's blood work results have arrived.".
